Head of the Joint Department with the RAS Institute of Far Eastern Studies at the HSE University, RIAC member.

Graduated with honours from Irkutsk State Pedagogical College (1977). Received his Ph.D. and Higher Doctorate degree in 1982 and 1993, respectively, from the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

1996-1999: Senior Fellow at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

1999-2001: Lead Researcher and Deputy Director of the Russia–China Centre at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

2001: Transferred to MGIMO University to serve as Professor and Director of Masters’ Programmes, while keeping his position at the Far East Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

2005: Awarded the academic title of Professor of Asian Studies at the Far East Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

2006: Appointed Chief Scientific Officer at the Far East Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

2007: Appointed Head of the international ASEAN Centre at MGIMO University.

2008: Permanently transferred from MGIMO University to the Far East Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences to serve as Deputy Director of Science and Head of the Centre of Strategic Affairs of the Northeast Asia and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

In the 1990s, Dr. Luzyanin was an exchange student at the John M. Olin Institute for Strategic Studies at Harvard University, attending Professor Samuel P. Huntington’s seminar class. He also worked at the Chinese Institute of International Affairs under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China and studied at the Salzburg Seminar in Austria (Session 415: “New Security Concepts in East Asia”).

Dr. Luzyanin is the recipient of awards from the Makarturov Fund, the Ford Foundation and the Russian Humanitarian Scientific Foundation. From 1999 to 2003, he was Director of the Russian side of the “Transport and Energy ‘Corridors’ in Northeast Asia” with the Japanese Sasakawa Foundation.

Dr. Luzyanin is a specialist in international relations and security in the Asia-Pacific Region, Central Asia and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, and on current affairs and the foreign policy of Northeast Asian countries. 

He was appointed Acting Director of the Far East Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences in October 2015.
